Beaches are one of my favorite places to visit but now looking at the beaches all dirty and full of plastic waste ruins the beautiful spot. Our school was having a voluntary beach clean up scheduled for a weekend. Last year, I took the AP environmental science course and I learned about how tiny pieces of plastic on seashores affect wildlife drastically and contaminate the water. Knowing this, I decided to volunteer for this beach clean up and spend my Sunday cleaning up the beach with my classmates rather than staying home doing nothing. For an hour, we were separated into groups of 3 and we tried to find every piece of trash we can and gather it in a garbage bag. There were many bottle tops found on the beach and used water bottles. After compiling all the garbage collected within an hour, we collected a total of a huge garbage bag. The organization we associated with for this service then gave a speech explaining the possible outcomes of this garbage and the importance of removing it. Doing something very small scale like a beach clean up felt good and something to be proud of. There were many people on the beach looking at us while we were collecting trash, and looking at us they were very mindful of their trash. They put their trash in our bags or the bin. This way it shows how a small beach clean up can spread awareness to the people on the beach and be mindful of their actions and its causes. It was a great way to spend my weekend doing something environmentally friendly with my friends rather than staying home idle.
